First off I have no problem with people doing what is best for themselves and their family. And I have no idea if we would have taken the AZ job if offered. But regarding Pope and BYU I have a few thoughts:
- BYU can't afford to hire job hoppers. If he were to leave after only 2 years that would set us back big time. BYU already has enough challenges when it comes to recruiting and other aspects. As with football, we need coaches that see this as a long term job (at least 5 years)
-Pope hasn't accomplished much yet at BYU. He still has a lot to prove. I've loved his energy and think he can be very successful here. BYU is pretty dang loyal and, again you hope Pope would give it a good go before jumping/considering something else.
-If Pope were to jump now the roster would be left in pieces
-Pope is 48 yrs old. He got into coaching late so he might feel pressure to move quickly in his career. I get that part.
Again, we should all do what is best for our family and careers. You always listen to offers so I get that part. High profile jobs are risky because you might only get one shot and then you're back to square 1 if you can't cut it. But if he were to leave after 2 or even 3 years I'd be disappointed. Of course I'm a BYU fan and my own selfish interests come first.
