When comparing the returns, I think context is important.
ETFs aren't anywhere near what cryptocurrency is. A better argument would be individual stocks to compare it but you can find tons of stocks that could give you the same 200-300% returns you posted from Jan 2018.
You don't buy an ETF expecting crazy returns. You buy ETFs for a less volatile performance and more of a steady return compared to a stock or a cryptocurrency.
