First time I heard Daniel Johnston I didn’t get it
It was a live session (Daytrotter) back in 2009 and I didn’t get it at all. He was old, had a terrible voice, a lisp, and the music was terrible. Everyone was commenting how amazing the session was and how he was an indie god, and I felt like it was the Emperor’s New Clothes.

I ended up renting The Devil and Daniel Johnston on Netflix, and started listening to his original music, and realized why people lived his music so much. His Daytrotter session was pretty terrible still, but I found myself becoming a huge fan.

Not all of his music is great, some is repetitive, and he’s not an amazing musician, but he has made some great music and there’s nothing quite like it.
