He was mostly nocturnal, though I sometimes spotted him early in the morning or at dusk. Once, I was standing on my porch and looked down to see eyes beneath my feet, looking up at me.

This was a decent sized black bear, maybe 300 pounds or so. Could have mauled me if he'd wanted, but he was pretty easily spooked.
