Below I transcribed a key part of the Zach Wilson interview on QB21 with Kirk Herbstreit. This exchange is the most telling of his recruitment. He was pretty upset that Utah didn't ever come see him. May have been the chip always on his shoulder, was his favorite team growing up, ignored him for some random QB out of SoCal.
WILSON:
BYU at the time I had no interest playing for. I didnt love the offense they had. Their quarterbacks hadn't been successful. It was tough getting recruited by all these teams out of state, but I never got any love from any of the people 30 minutes down the road. It was hard because they were right up the street and they didn't spend an ounce to come down the street and say 'hey were going to come take a look at you.'
Then BYU's season ends, Ty Detmer gets let go and Kalani calls and says"Hey, I want you to be our quarterback." And what a whirlwind that was with my mom screaming at Kalani and saying, "Where have you been all this time? I can't believe you would come into the game this late?"
What a decison it was for me. Really I picked BYU because I wanted to be close to my family. I wanted play in front of those 70k BYU fans against that big time schedule we play against.
