Because if they go to 16, they will have to extend invites to more G5 teams if not all conference champs (which is what it absolutely should be).
If Boise, UCF, Cinci, Memphis, BYU (yuck...they'd have to join a conference) regularly play in the playoff, they will suck talent, viewership, and money away from P5.
The worst thing that could happen to UofU would be for BYU to be in the playoff hunt every year. Lots of other p5 schools would be in the same boat.
