probably 150 students pass through my class, who range all over the spectrum of testimony and gospel seriousness. I watch as they get out of High school and head to college/adulthood etc. Most of the still-active kids head off to one of the BYUs.
In my purely anecdotal observation, I don’t see much of a difference between BYU or BYU-I when it comes to staying in the church, going on missions, getting temple married, etc. But there’s a big difference when it comes to BYU-Hawaii. The kids tend to have much different experiences. Lots of them never make it on a mission. They seem more likely to only go a semester or two and then end up back in town semi-active in the singles ward. I know of many who have left the church within a year or 2 of leaving high school that went to BYU-H.
Again, this is purely anecdotal and I know this stuff happens at all the schools. But I dont know much about BYU-Hawaii. Does this match anyone else’s observations?
Is it a chicken-egg thing where a certain type of kid is more pre-disposed to choose Hawaii?
