hadn't also layered in:
- 2004 52-21 obliteration
- 2008 48-24 obliteration
- 2011 54-10 obliteration
- 2019 30-12 obliteration
then maybe I'd feel differently. Utah has won some close games that could have easily tipped to BYU — I already made that point in my post.
The point is that on top of not only usually winning the close games up for grabs, Utah also found a way to sprinkle in some historically awful beatdowns of BYU. So when you add up the two (the outright number of wins + the embarrassment of some of them) it starts to feel pretty silly to think BYU fans have much to say here until we not only start winning games, but do so without so really wild last second miracles in some cases.
I would prefer to not rely on hail marys (2000, 2006, 2007), last gasps in OT (2009), or a stunning doink (1998) before I start gloating around town about wins over Utah.
Utah would also probably not prefer to rely on blocked kicks (2010, 2012), last gasps hold on for dear life (2015), or a furious comeback (2018), but they certainly made their presence known in multiple other years outside of that where they ripped BYU's face right off. Sure would be nice to know the feeling the other way instead of trying to imagine what it felt like as an 11 year old.
