decision.
The first question that needs to be asked is the value to BYU of having conference based access to the CFP. Is the road to the CFP easier with an independent schedule or through a G5 conference? Is CFP the end goal or a financially stable program?
We as fans act like BYU can join the AAC and basically win it on a regular basis and be part of the playoff. But that isn't the reality. At its current state BYU wouldn't be winning the conference every year but certainly would be in the mix.
Also, would revenue take a hit in joining a conference? BYU has some fantastic upcoming schedules with name programs that can fill the stadium. Will ticket sales revenue take a hit with games against Tulsa, Tulane, Temple, etc? Would recruiting improve or decline in the AAC? Would excitement around the program improve with an easier schedule (see this last year for example). Would fans actually be able to watch all the games while part of a G5?
To me, joining a G5 isn't a cut and dry decision. I'm not sure what is best for the long term health of the program. I just know you don't sell your soul just for CFP access unless that alone provides the benefits you need to keep competing.
