BYU wasn't highly ranked in 2019 because they lost more than 2 games. There's a big difference between 10-2 and 6-6.
Cincinnati was top 10 because they had a good 2019 season and were undefeated through 2020. IOW, it took 2 years for them to get national respect. And even then they were left out.
But to clarify the point further, I never said that BYU in the AAC couldn't go undefeated and get into the top 10. I am saying that they could do that, but at what cost in going to a G5 league?
Whereas, with an independent schedule, you don't have to go undefeated to get top 10 respect if you have a healthy mix of P5 games, you lose no more than say 2 games against said P5 teams, and have no bad losses to G5 teams.
BYU in 2019 did not fit that...not even close.
So BYU can keep the benefits of Indy--where they're a de facto P5 equivalent.
