I believe it happened like this.
P5 conferences aka BCS conferences at that time, amassed a huge amount of wealth that they then used to buy wins against non-BCS teams.
Non bcs teams became dependent on the money from these games.
BCS teams threaten to leave the NCAA and start their own system.
NCAA then votes to grant them “autonomy” to do as they please.
Boom. Here we are.
