Most Utah mountains aren't that much taller than much of the Appalachians.
I'm not calling out Bushy specifically, but I've seen the same sentiment posted on here a lot over the past 10 years. Mostly from people who probably have never spent any time further east than Denver. They say they could never consider moving out of the western US because of the mountains and all the recreation associated with them. Then they derisively call any eastern mountain a hill.

Yes, the mountains in the eastern US are lower than the Rockies. There are no 10,000 or 12,000 foot peaks or anything close to that in the eastern US. However, the whole eastern half of the US is 4000 to 5000 feet lower than the west. A mountain's prominence is measured from the elevation at its base to its summit. A true measure of how "big" a mountain is is its prominence.

The mountain with the largest prominence in the world is Mt. McKinley (Denali). It even has a larger prominence than Mt. Everest. When you start measuring mountains in Utah, there are a handful of really tall mountains. There are two that have over 6000 feet of prominence. There are 5 more that have between 5000 and 6000 feet of prominence. The rest of the mountains in Utah are in the 3000+ to 4000+ foot range in prominence.

There are two mountains in the Appalachians that have over 6000 feet of prominence. In a nutshell, the biggest mountains in the east are the same size as the biggest mountains in Utah. There are a bunch of other Appalachian mountains that are between 3000 and 5000 feet in prominence.

So when someone on here says that all the mountains back east are just hills, it's an uneducated and uninformed statement, usually caused by ignorance.
