The height of nearby mountains often meddles with other large mountains having higher prominence. For example,
Lone Peak Utah is 6,000 ft above the valley floor, yet only has a prominence of 892 ft.
The mountains in the west are vastly larger than the mountain of the East, even relative to prominence.
That said, not all eastern mountains are simply hills and there are some quite beautiful and majestic mountains in the eastern states.
