Backcountry Intervention Needed
I think the in-laws see things correctly. I love the conservative approach.
You never know what the future holds, when things are going to go to hell. They have enjoyed a comfortable life, will enjoy a comfortabke returement, and are ready in case calamity comes. I respect their discipline.

I really relate to their perspective. Ive always been frugal, a saver and investor, but I just thought when I finished school and started making real money Id be able to ease up a bit. I just cant. Still driving 2 20 year old vehicles with 250k miles, spend maybe $150/year on clothes. Taco Bell is eating out. I cant imagine buying big toys or a new car unless IRA/401K/HSA is fully funded and my grad school debt is paid off.
