Our vulnerability is even greater
Silicon metal is used to make Polysilicon. Polysilicon is used to make wafers. Wafers are used to make chips.
Building chip factories in USA is a nice idea but where will the wafers come from? There is almost no wafer industry in US today. Most wafers are made in Asia.
There are a few Polysilicon producers in US but the vast majority are in China.
China dominates silicon metal production globally as well though there are a few plants in US. We are a net importer of silicon metal though
