I just finished “phase 1” of our home reno. I did the master bath, master bedroom, hallway, and two other bedrooms. I did a combination of DIY and using subcontractors i called in myself.

The use of subcontractors did bite me in the butt a few times. First off, i didn’t have a super clear order of operations so to speak, so i had to DIY some stuff after they left. Second, it’s hard to find good subs in the Utah market without waiting forever.

For phase 2, which is the kitchen, living room, and split level stairs, i won’t be able to do DIY due to work and there will be more of a sense of urgency due to the kitchen being out of order.

If you’ve done a large home reno, what do you recommend in terms of using a GC vs Being your own GC? And what tips do you have for finding a good GC? I’ve heard SO MANY stories of people getting ripped off.
