You're absolutely right. Utah is difficult for public transit but UTA is inept
I think a big part of the problem is that spaces are still relatively large and population density is comparatively low (it's a long way from Provo to the Point of the Mountain). But even in downtown SLC, light rail service is poor and infrequent; the busses and trains don't run on time, and the timetables between services aren't synced.

That last point is actually my biggest gripe. Light rail from the SLC airport into the city should be frequent and should run like clockwork; but it isn't. The light rail leaves the SLC airport infrequently (only every 30 minutes when I was there last) and doesn't arrive at the FrontRunner station at times that closely approximate FrontRunner departures. My wife and I tried to take public transit home from the airport not too long ago (but pre-COVID) and ended up waiting in the airport for nearly 30 minutes (just missed the light rail) and then on the platform for the FrontRunner for almost 45 minutes (because it only comes once every hour). I just don't have an hour+ to wait on transit. If it's not going to be consistent and reliable, I just won't ride.
