Not necessarily disagreeing, but I think you have a very fixed view of a "contract"

I'm not totally sure why the fixation on abiding by the original contract.  Things chance, contracts get updated, and both parties can come out better.

As a season ticket holder, I'd love to see Notre Dame on the schedule in Provo.  But as a BYU fan, I love to see great opponents on BYU's schedule, and if the option is BYU-ND in Vegas in 2022 or BYU-Sisters of the Poor in Provo in 2022, I'll take the former and be very happy for it.  And, whether we like it or not, Notre Dame doesn't hurt for opponents.  BYU can push all they want to get ND in Provo, but it could either be a game scheduled for 20 years from now, in which case, who cares, or ND may simply say, "fine, here's the $1mm we owe you, don't bother ever calling us again".  

You can only work with what you've got and both parties are very cognizant of the power they hold in the negotiation.
