Unpopular opinion time:

What utah did in 2004 was just as impressive as BYU in 1984. Utah’s 2008 season was more impressive than BYU’s 1984 championship season.

Byu got the benefit of playing in an era where going undefeated and beating a 6-6 Michigan team in a bowl won us a championship. The Utah team in 2004 had a similar strength of schedule and beat a mediocre Pitt team in the fiesta bowl. Didn’t end in a championship, but the team’s games/opponents were very similar.

2008 Utah once again went undefeated, but this time were given a chance to prove themselves against a top team in Alabama. They beat them comfortably. Sure, the system didn’t grant Utah a championship, but that team accomplished more than 1984 BYU. Only difference was the AP Poll (ridiculously) had the power to award their own national champion back in 1984.
