The other part of the timing was the other undefeated teams in 2004. That’s

college football, unfortunately. If there had been teams in ‘84 with the resumes of 2004 USC or Auburn then there’s no way BYU gets voted number 1. And I don’t say that to take anything away from BYU but to point out how fickle CFB is (and especially how fickle it was pre-playoff). A championship season one year could only be good enough for a top 4-5 finish the next year.
