My son did not ignore their request, he responded that he would defer, they then
informed him that he would just need to submit his mission call once received. Due to circumstances unique to our culture/religion/missions, he has not yet become eligible to serve a mission and therefore receive a call. Yes, we didn't call in the fall, we called in the winter. I don't blame BYU for that. However, I do take issue that BYU is unable to assess a situation rationally and reasonably to provide what is an extremely small exception to the zero tolerance policy. They would have kept his admission if we called in the fall, but not in the winter? We accepted that he couldn't attend this fall, but I don't see why he should have to re-apply with all new recommendations (what happened to the ones that were submitted last year?) to attend in the winter. If they can hold his enrollment spot for 2 years, they can hold it for 1.

If you are going to allow deferrals at all, you have to be prepared for situations that aren't so clear cut. If the answer was "once you defer, you can't attend until your deferred semester 2 years later, no exceptions, but we have your spot held until then," that would be one thing. But that's not what's happening here, the answer is "you didn't get a mission call, so you don't have a spot." I don't believe BYU has to do that to maintain fairness and control over admissions.
