The duality of college football and basketball
It is honestly pretty crazy to think about.

Sports was more or less a hobby 100 years ago where people like you and me that went to a college could play and maybe have a few games against rival opponents.

Then as time went on college sports has become this huge, trillion dollar industry. The best players are treated like rock stars and they are on television all of the time.

But the duality comes from having these "rock stars" on campus. Many of these guys, especially at the top schools don't plan on graduating from college. They are there to play football or basketball and use it as a stepping stone to get into the NFL/NBA.

But these same players need colleges. Without being attached to a college to we care about a Provo High All-Star team made up of former High School stars? I sure don't. What primarily makes me cheer for them is the name on the front of the jersey which is BYU.

Most young men who play sports dream of playing in a big college stadium or arena. They work hard and bust their butts just for the chance. I wouldn't have needed a scholarship to have gone and played for BYU football, I would have done it for free.

So BYU has the leverage, right? Well not really anymore. These days players can come and go as they please in the transfer portal. They can look around for the best stipends, playing time and now NIL deals. It has become a business for the athletes, which for at least a lot of it is well deserved (Jimmer not making money on BYU selling thousands of his jerseys (no they weren't just buying some random number) was never right, neither was a golfer not being able to make money from being a swing coach for BYU alumni).

So where will we end up? It will be interesting to see how it plays out. How do you keep fans of the Universities engaged when you go through players like you do socks? When these players are more worried about looking good than winning? One thing is for sure, the NCAA was a corrupt organization and them losing power is a good thing. But as highly sought after as these young athletes are, without University Support and Alumni buy in this all goes away.
