and their AD still has a seat at the negotiating table with each of the conferences as if they were a conference unto themselves. And the name/marquee/tradition etc. still makes them a really attractive and lucrative option for teams to schedule.

For BYU, I think they can manage Indy as well. I'd prefer they join a solid conference, but they can manage indy just fine, albeit with compromises and smaller scale than ND.
