Scenario. Does it suddenly become a 20 team league that has its own playoff system and everything?
So is their regular season just a long playoff — and everyone else just dropped off?
Are the other conferences allowed to be ranked?
Do the TV partners set it up so that the other conferences have no intrigue at all?
I think those guys make more money having a playoff that involves a much broader scope of college football
This whole thing is about the 12 team playoff. The SEC thinks they could have 6 to 7 spots every year.!that’s a lot...but it’s still only half.
Where do the others come fro?
In that scenario, I still think people tune in on the national level and at the local level for well ranked teams and/or playoff contenders.
Utah-Oregon CCG had more than 50% of the viewers as the USC-Oregon CCG.
Of course, that has nothing to do with Utah, and more to do with people in the high volume mid west and southeast watching a game with playoff implications.
So there is a reasonable argument, it’s flawed, but reasonable, that playoff intrigue and top 10 teams may draw better than even elite programs.
I think college football will still need second-tier conferences to help provide those audiences.
At some point, people are going to tune out when 2-5 USC plays 3-4 Oregon.
