HISTORY FBS Texas vs Oklahoma
The Texas vs OU rivalry developed over 100 years ago. Most people can guess that, but what most of you don't realize is that program's have conference relationships and wives too. Until 1996, both Oklahoma and Texas were not just rivals, but in different conferences. There were no P5 schools. In fact most conference were composed of two tiers, the haves and have notes. Have notes greatly outnumbered the blue bloods.

In the old Big Eight, Oklahoma, Nebraska and at times, Colorado were the Royal Court. OKstste, Missouri, KU, KSU and Iowa State were the welcome mats.

Texas was in the old Southwest Conference comprised of seven/eight Texas programs and Arkansas. But the powers there were aTm, Texas and Arkansas.

People much younger than say 45 don't realize putting OU and Texas together for anything than a dance at the Texas State Fair every year was absolutely ridiculous. They hated each other. Oklahoma like Texas was cattle, oil and gas. But Tulsa was not Dallas and Norman was not Austin. The marriage was arranged by parents rocky from the get-go and when asked why they were bailing ship, every university response beginning with Arkansas started with, "Well Oklahoma and Texas are always one-upping each other on how to be a (rhyms with Dick, means much the same)"

Both programs think like territorial kingdoms where all other programs were subject vassel states. There were the old Big Eight programs for Oklahoma to overlord, and all those Texas programs for UT to direct. Of course aTm never liked its marriage to Texas either and that's why it left.

The bottom line is simple...

Texas or oklahoma may both go, or stay, or the house divide and one (Oklahoma for sure) leave. Texas may poke prod and actually leave too, but I would not be shocked to see the Longhorns stay and act like nothing ever happened, all while fathering the abandoned vessels under its wing.

Should that happen the league may expand...by one, perhaps UCF. The big money booster's are all old enough to know BYU is 4-1 vs Texas in the last 33 years. Its lone 17-16 win was by 1 point in Austin after coming from behind in the final 3 minutes. Yep, Texas can say, in 300 minutes of football against BYU it has enjoyed 3 minutes if success. Don't mention how BYU won the four games. It's as embarrassing as admitting Bevo was hoof on the barbi last night.
