In the current state of flux, there is no way for BYU to have confidence in a jump to a conference that may effectively be worse than indy. We wouldn’t know whether ACC/BIG/PAC will still poach teams. It could easily be a similar thing to Boise joining the MWC.

People talk as if BYU can jump easily in and out of indy. It can’t. In this scenario, it is harder for BYU to jump than a team in an existing conference because that team can usually go back to the conference it left if it needs to. If BYU jumps, it has to burn every team on its schedule — even if we can eventually keep the game as OOC, there will be a significant period of uncertainty for the school that scheduled BYU. If BYU jumps and the B12 falls apart or is relegated, what do you think the conversations will be like with the schools we need to re-schedule with? If we think BYU has few friends now, it’ll be much worse after burning everybody.

BYU won’t accept a conference invite without thoroughly understanding the deal and being comfortable with it. It would be very difficult to get to a BYU approval at this point.
