Just some random thoughts on the realignment topic, which I haven't seen mentioned. Sorry, if I missed it.
1. If Big12 picks up teams, they'll likely pull from AAC before taking BYU. Each team taken from the AAC weakens the AAC and strengthens the Big12's position as a top-5 conf. If they don't, some will see AAC as being on par with Big12 conf w/o Texas and OU.
2. Big12 brand is way better than AAC brand. If these two conferences combine, it assuredly will be under Big12 brand. Brand is everything in college football.
3. If 16-team conferences are forming, there's no reason the Pac12 has to expand to 16. They could simply remain at 12 and they wouldn't be left out of anything.
4. Politics will play a huge part in all this. As fans, we like to think of realignment in terms of football strength, brand, or even academics at times. But politics will play a huge part in shaping future conferences. Governors have a lot of influence, so I expect to see them get involved soon, looking out for the interests of their schools.
5. ESPN may really like us where we are today... a low-cost fill-in-the-gaps programming. Don't be surprised if ESPN is not advocating for us to join a power conference.
6. Despite analytical data, people will see Big12 leftovers as generally being a better pickup than BYU. Interest from the AAC is probably zero now. Why pick up BYU when you can pick up Big12 leftovers?
