Seems like BYU is payed appropriately in the market relative to the value they bring (between 4-8MM/year )- maybe a bit underpaid. Seems like about 80+% of the P5 teams are getting paid too much relative to the value they bring.
In other words, this thing is breaking because it's unsustainable - how long have the OSU's, USC's, and the UT/OU's of the world literally funded the entire campus for these middling, mediocre programs that have had their hands out for a payday for doing NOTHING? What's surprising about all of this is the hubris with which they've done it. Utah should remove those PAC stickers from their bumpers and tattoos from their (wherever's) and replace them with "I heart USC" stickers - because that's the only thing making their banquet at the trough possible. It would be interesting to see how much Utah would fetch on the open market.
In hindsight, it's not sad that USC/Oregon/UT/OU/Clem/FSU/ALA/GA/LSU/AUB/FLA/ND/OSU want to break away - what's sad is that CAL/AZ/TTU/KU/MSU/ILL/Mizzou/ etc have been able to survive this long as quasi elites given their pedigree.
