Very true. I worked for myself, and I did
alright, but his financial concerns are not like mine were. As I approached retirement, I was tracking my investments, figuring out which assets I needed to sell to retire. In contrast, when he’s closer to retirement, he will need to decide whether to take a very large lump sum pension benefit or lifetime annuity for he and his wife. He also will need to worry about the timing and impact of the minimum distributions requirements on his large 401k balance. It’s a nice problem to have, I guess. Who knows how long these oil and gas companies will be around, but those who started working for them in the 1990s or early 2000s have done very well for themselves.
