TV Ratings for all Big12, PAC12, BYU, selected AAC/MWC/independent
I've seen lots of talk about TV ratings, so figured I'd share a document I've built.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSwqR5dFHODbE_oXYoLbP_MCnSBOOX7oAi5-s39hGaeAEED_fhNg9913qV_NKCNjwq9Rd1PXiTxy_zj/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true has the TV viewership for every game available for quite a few teams from 2017-2020 (and will be updated with 2021 values when available).
This is provided for use or reference by anyone who wants to have accurate data in discussing teams, expansion and TV ratings.
The following teams are included:
BYU
3 MWC teams discussed as potential expansion options (SDSU, UNLV, Boise)
5 AAC teams (Cincy, Houston, Memphis, UCF, Navy)
Army
All 12 PAC12 teams
All 10 Big12 teams (including Texas and Oklahoma)
Notre Dame
You can use this however you want, but probably the most useful stat here (in my mind) is the average of Top 20 games. Just looking at total viewership provides too much advantage to teams that are simply televised more often (for example only 70% of BYU games are nationally televised, whereas 90% of TCU games are so TCU can rack up more raw numbers). And looking at averages is also misleading since BYU might have a game televised against Liberty, but Army only has games televised against high-profile opponents, so BYU's average is pulled down by those games that wouldn't be televised for others.
Looking at the average of each program's top 20 games takes (on average) the top 5 games from each season, rewarding both high-end draws and depth and results in the following ranking
1 | Oklahoma | 8.15 |
2 | Notre Dame | 7.06 |
3 | Texas | 5.17 |
4 | Oregon | 4.13 |
5 | Washington | 3.69 |
6 | USC | 3.64 |
7 | Oklahoma St | 3.48 |
8 | Iowa State | 2.83 |
9 | West Virginia | 2.82 |
10 | TCU | 2.76 |
11 | UCF | 2.63 |
12 | Stanford | 2.49 |
13 | Baylor | 2.49 |
14 | Navy | 2.45 |
15 | Army | 2.4 |
16 | Washington St | 2.29 |
17 | Utah | 2.19 |
18 | UCLA | 2.16 |
19 | Texas Tech | 2.11 |
20 | Memphis | 2.1 |
21 | Cincinnati | 2.05 |
22 | Kansas St | 1.94 |
23 | Arizona St | 1.8 |
24 | Colorado | 1.56 |
25 | BYU | 1.48 |
26 | Cal | 1.43 |
27 | Houston | 1.36 |
28 | Arizona | 1.35 |
29 | Boise St | 1.27 |
30 | Kansas | 0.89 |
31 | Oregon St | 0.74 |
32 | San Diego St | 0.5 |
33 | UNLV | 0.12 |
For me, the biggest takeaway is how much being in the Western US hurts. This is particularly evident in comparing the PAC12 to the Big12 (though the PAC12 network also hurts there), but also in comparing BYU to Cincy, Memphis, UCF.
