I know it sucks, but Prop 13 did not double the tax. Prop 13 kept the previous owner's property tax from rising up to

the level that you are going to have to pay.

Just like Prop 13 will keep your property taxes from rising as fast as the housing market does while you own that house. The jump in taxes is a shock if you weren't expecting it, but the very slow rise in taxes going forward will be nice.

Congrats on buying the new house! Good for you that you were able to get into a house in CA. And condolences on all the various taxes. The CA state government is a hungry beast, and it must be fed.
