I took the advice here and ordered a skunk trap. A couple of days prior to the trap arriving we had video of a skunk and a raccoon using the cat door.
The trap arrived and my son set it up in the utility closet next to the cat dish. About 11 pm he heard something in the closet. He waited a few minutes until things quieted down. He wanted to be prepared so he had our fishing spear in his hand. He walked in and could see that the trap hadn't been tripped. He looked to his left and on the shelf was a giant raccoon 2 feet from his face. He and the raccoon both screamed and he stabbed the raccoon in the chest with the spear. He had it pinned against the wall but the thing was going berserk. I was in bed and woke to what sounded like someone doing demolition on a wall. The raccoon was able to escape with a slow blood trail that we couldn't track very far.
The next night we were able to catch the skunk and just released it into the wild when we went on a bike ride. Those traps are very user friendly and pretty entertaining to get up close to a skunk without much risk of getting sprayed. I was going to drown it but my kids didn't want to kill it.
We'll have to wait and see if the raccoon comes back for another round. Hard to believe how desperate this animal is. It has been punched, hit by a rock, and now stabbed.
