I don't think so. In my experience sports are more competitive at a younger age now than they ever were when I was a kid
And it isn't even close. I played sports year round and my 6 year old plays in higher stress/bigger reward sports than I played in at age 12.
I think there are a lot of reasons sports participation is down. I think the everybody gets a medal thing is totally over blown. I think things like club sports destroying rec sports is an issue.

A lot of it is also other countries are better able to send their youngest, best, & brightest to America for college and
