Maybe so, but none of us have any basis to judge the thoughts and intents of
someone else's heart. That's true of people we know well. It's especially a true of a stranger of whom everything we have learned comes from a handful of clicks on the internet.

We are allowed to judge actions. He made a public mistake. What was most upsetting to me was that he seemed to be doubling down. He merely made his account private without acknowledging it as wrong. Then he continued to sell shirts. This will no doubt be worn in public for years to come by individuals who are either intentionally or ignorantly vicious.

We were right to condemn the actions. If I make a similar mistake someday I would ultimately appreciate people who helped me recognize my mistake. Condemning the action also helps minimize some of the damage because it can help everyone understand and avoid the same mistake.

However, most of us would be wrong not to accept his public apology. Most of us were not measurably harmed. For us it is nothing more than a public word retracted by a public word. In his shoes, we would all appreciate not having our mistakes held over our heads indefinitely. I'll gladly give him the benefit of the doubt in return.
