Was Saturday the loudest LES has ever been? My take:
First, without official decibel meters it’s impossible to empirically decide which game was the loudest. So it’s fun to discuss, but we can’t know.
Second, I think there can be recency bias, but there can also be romanticized memory bias.
Third, there are two (maybe more) different ways to think about loudest. The first is to consider the loudest moments because of amazing plays like Luke Staley down the sideline, or Mangum to Juergens. The other way is to consider sustained volume throughout the game.
So, all that said, I BELIEVE that Saturdays was the loudest I’ve ever heard at LES in regards to sustained volume. The student section was measurably and officially larger than any other game ever. It was awesome! All of of us were so hungry to reverse the decade of defeat! We lead the whole game! We all just heard the best news of our football lives the day before! It was magical.
The LaVell days were amazing for football, but I’m VERY confident that it was never as loud for sustained volume. There were just too many LaVell clones: blue hairs who told you to sit down and shut up. They cared every bit as much, they didn’t realize that as attendees, their job was to act as a twelfth man rather than just take in the game. (Think: “There not in the afternoons anymore”)
Kalani is so different. His energy is young and vibrant on the sidelines. It breeds energy in the stands as we witnessed on Saturday. It was a younger acting crowd; more standing than I’ve ever seen.
(Way too long and unnecessary, but those are my thoughts.)

Yes BYU was penalized for crowd noise. Also, Dowis died while driving drunk about 5 years ago. He had a BAC of 0.233.
