Part of me agrees with this post but the other part of me acknowledges that places like fast food restaurants and the like provide opportunities for young people, unskilled workers and others dealing with challenges that make it difficult to have some sort of employment and income.
As low as the bar may be — it also provides some purpose to some of these folks which is also meaningful, even though it may be hard for the average cber to relate considering the number of post graduate and successful professionals among us.
The other component that is uncomfortable to discuss but is reality is the intelligence factor. Contrary to all the “you can be whatever you wanna be” nonsense that started to be preached in the early 90’s — there is a spectrum of intellect and skills that is too often overlooked. I’m not suggesting that everyone who worked for or works at a fast food restaurant is of low intelligence but it is fair to say that the majority of them are not exactly Fortune 500 C-suite executive capable.
Life is complicated. Some people are born with certain skills or attributes that allow them to succeed in professions that generally require more brain power where others really do need a profession or options where things are very basic and easy to manage. Most are somewhere in between.
Point is, it’s good for society that jobs of varying levels of skills are available — the alternative is quite concerning.
