Honestly, I know we're all excited about beating Utah, but the Big 12 news is MUCH MUCH bigger

The programs have been on opposite trajectories since 2011 - Utah has been getting better and better while BYU has (let's be honest) largely been struggling to tread water.

One win doesn't change that. It's great, but if we'd managed to pull out (for example) the victory in 2016 it would have been a great exciting game...that wouldn't have changed much of anything long term.

But moving to the Big 12 is a fundamental, underlying change that redefines this rivalry again.

Other moments that have redefined the rivalry:

1972 BYU hiring Lavell Edwards switched it from Utah-dominated to BYU-dominated (prior to that time Utah was 38-5-4 against BYU, BYU then went 16-2 in the next 18 meetings)

1990 Utah hiring Ron McBride switched it from BYU-dominated to farily balanced (not a massive flip in rivalry like Edwards was, but at least got Utah back to respectable, going 5-6 against LaVell)

2003 Utah hiring Urban/Whitt and then moving to PAC12 (all very connected) moved it back to being a Utah-dominated rivalry (since hiring Urban, Utah has gone 13-4 against BYU, and the difference is obviously worse if we only look at since they went PAC12)

2023 BYU going to the Big 12 is the next big change and probably brings the two back to even footing.  But every 15-20 years it seems like there's something that redefines how the two teams compare.
