more talented football team, and many seemed to get riled up by that take. ASU committed a ton of penalties, 16 to be exact. They were incredibly undisciplined, which is obviously part of the game. I didn't realize that claiming ASU had more talent, however, was such an outlandish claim.
I'd be interested to go look at all their drives to verify, but it felt like nearly every time we forced them to punt it was largely a result of ASU getting behind the sticks due to penalties. But looking at a simple box score tells a pretty good story.
Passing YPA:
ASU: 9.1
BYU: 7.9
Rushing YPA:
ASU: 4.9 (RBs only: 6.6)
BYU: 3.7 (RBs only: 3.4)
3rd Down Conv:
ASU: 7/13 (53.8%)
BYU: 4/11 (36.3%)
Penalty Yardage:
ASU: 16 - 121
BYU: 3 - 25
BYU was the better team on Saturday, because penalties are part of the game. But I definitely left LES on Saturday feeling like BYU defeated a more talented roster by being the more mistake-free team.
