This has always been my issue with Tuiaki's defense:

Even Sitake himself has said that his team needs to produce more "havoc". This is the last year that havoc was produced by Bill Connelly with his S&P+ data. This visualization compares total havoc with front 7 havoc. You can see where BYU compares to the rest of the country. You can't be a quality defense and you can't help your offense with field position if you're in the bottom left
