I own a Santa Cruz and a Specialized. I love both.
The Santa Cruz Hightower is very comfortable. My Stumpjumper feels a little more agile and is faster, though it may be the tires (2.5 v 2.7).
If you are moderately into it, I think you can get by fine with any brand/model that is comfortable (geometry depending on the trails you typically ride), with NX or higher components. There is a marked difference in my experience going from NX to GX but either works.
I think the sweet spot is around the base-level carbon models.
