It is and they aren't just there to "serve drinks and take trash"
99.9% of people will never see what they're actually there for which is to ensure the safest possible outcome in the event of an emergency. They're an integral part of the flight crew for handling emergency situations. They have full blown simulators just like pilots to practice.
Saying they're there to serve drinks is akin to saying the pilot is just a glorified bus driver.
