the Defense claim to fame is bowing up in the Red Zone and keeping the opponent out of the end zone. I would suspect that a good part of their practice is devoted to Red Zone.
To me, it does not matter how the ball gets to the 24 yd line: pass, run or fumble, it is the Defensive job to keep them out of the end zone: PERIOD...
Likewise, when the offense has the ball inside the 10 yd line, it is their job to put it in the end zone...
BTW, if the defensive gameplan is so rigid and unflexable to account for the need for immediate adjustments, I'd say you got the wrong man designing the plan. We have witnessed this unwillingness to adjust or inability to comprehend the obvious for years
