My take was that they thought they could control the los with a base defense, and unfortunately didn’t scheme the run well enough. It wasn’t necessarily that Boise was doing anything unexpected or different. I understand from others that Boise ran the same pulling guard play several times for success. We were outmatched in the box, essentially, and slow to change the approach. I think the coaches saw them as an injured and outmanned OL going into the game and didn’t respect their ability to run as much as years past.

They adjusted in the second half to add more defenders to the los. They still had some difficulty the first drive out of the half.
