Not necessarily a scary thing for him to say. Teams do this when desperate
It is a sign the other team does not feel they can win with their normal schemes. They must come up with something unexpected to have a chance.

It's not scary that he would say that but what is kind of scary is that the perception is there that BYU was not able to adjust properly enough or quick enough during the game to combat what Boise decided to do.

Unfortunately you cannot always stick to what you prepared for all week. From time to time based on what the other team does you may be required to throw out most of your game plan and do something totally different to combat what the other team is doing. If you do not, you basically are allowing the other team to have a chance to control the game.

This is something I think Boise figured out a long time ago and thus seems to out coach opponents all the time to win big games. They know the other team is preparing a certain way. They use that as a strategy. Based on what they think the opponent is going to prepare for, then doing something totally unexpected, knowing the other team will have difficulty adjusting live during the game and thus putting them on more equal ground or giving them an advantage. The only way to combat this is to be able and willing to make the same type of drastic changes yourself during the game to stop what they are doing.

Boise was content to stack their O line on one side or the other based on what BYU was doing and then just run it to that side. Content to gain 4 or 5 yards on first down running the ball and then getting into third and short and either running it again or throwing a little dump pass off to the RB underneath. They didn't care about their passing game, or what they had done before, they were just looking for a way they thought would give them a chance. Keep the ball out of BYU's offenses hands and grind the clock. I think Boise saw how impressive BYU's secondary has been. Did not think they could have success passing the ball and went to this other plan. They didn't even try to disguise what they were going to do. It was obvious running plays.

BYU's D made adjustments, bringing more guys onto the D line but they were spread out so it didn't matter. Boise still had BYU out numbered on one side. IMO BYU would have needed to bring the LB's closer to the line and even shade a safety or LB over to the side Boise was stacking and or bring pressure from the outside of the line to get to the RB early, and or the QB if he dropped into a pass.
