I read a story (and it might even be true) that Alexander thought he was playing Woody Allen

until one day he read a script and went to Larry David and said that would never happen to anybody and if it did they would never react that way. When David said "that happened to me and I reacted that way," Alexander realized he was not playing Woody Allen, he was playing Larry David.
Then as the show went on George just evolved into his own character and Alexander was just playing George.
