can a rock band go before new stuff just continues to sound like their old stuff or just all the same.

See my comments about Coldplay. Great first decade in their catalogue. Since then..same old same old.

U2. Maybe a good 15 year run from their very early stuff through achtung baby. Everything since just sounds like your typical adult pop rock.
