I was once walking from work to BART by the Embarcadero stop in SF and saw a guy
walking across a four-way stop sign intersection get hit by a stupid cab driver who sped through the intersection. The guy went flying.

I was close and was one of the first people to run over to try to offer help. He was laying on the road with a completely shattered pelvis. I’m hopeful for him but I wouldn’t be surprised if he never walked again.

He was still conscious but in shock, and kept saying, “my phone is in my back pocket. please call my wife and let her know I’m okay! I need my wife to know I’m okay!”

The two things I’ll never forget are 1) a slow motion replay in my mind of exactly what it looked like when he was hit and 2) how the only thing on his mind was making sure his wife know he was okay.

I also married a girl who was hit by a car going 30 mph in Rexburg. She was remarkably okay (after about 6 months recovery), but I do wonder if that experience has created some longer-term mental and physiological issues she’s had to work through.
