My Experience at the Baylor game
- went with a caravan of ~35 friends from a ward here in Texas. Last week’s loss took a lot of the excitement out of this road trip, but we were still looking forward to a new experience.
- we sat in the BYU fan section. No BU fans anywhere near us. But we did park and shuttle over to the stadium with their fans. We also walked over the bridge with their fans. All interactions were positive. One funny side note, every BU fan we interacted with assumed we came in from Utah, and were shocked by the sheer number of traveling fans.
- there was a lot of blue in that stadium. Made me proud. I’m a jaded Cougar fan and I needed that reminder of why I support BYU. We were loud and proud, and the sting of the bad performance was softened by the camaraderie of our fan base.
- After the game we walked and talked with a ton of BU fans. At dinner in Waco we had even more interactions. Here’s what we heard repeatedly: 1) you guys travel really well. 2) that was the loudest opposing fan base we’ve heard outside of Texas and Oklahoma. Apparently the fast cadence B-Y-U chant was thunderous if you were sitting below the upper level. 3) welcome to the Big 12, we’re happy to have you. 4) you guys are great fans.

It’s a blast to interact with non Yewt fan bases, and hear their perspective on things. Things will intensify over time between us and Big 12 schools, but these are all schools and athletic programs we should respect and extend the hand of friendship to. Established fan bases, each with a tradition that they’re proud of (except TCU:)), and I think they want to represent their schools well as much as we do. These aren’t the annoying fan bases of the WCC or MWC.
