Game observations from McClane Stadium. Positives and Negatives -
Positives:

1. Baylor University is a beautiful campus. First time attending a game and would recommend it. Stadium right on the river is cool.

2. The Baylor fan base was incredibly welcoming. Very friendly and warm. They were complimentary of our school, team and traveling fans.

3. Our WR group is very good, better than we've had since, well, a long time. Pau, Nakua and Romney are all starting D1 guys almost anywhere.

Negatives:

1. Our oline struggles in getting any push or opening holes in the run game. Allgeier was bottled up. Pass blocking was a little better, but Connor Pay got beat a number of times. Would hate to be him in the film room this week. He played like the freshman that he is. Got a ways to go. Hopefully we have the right coaches in place to teach and recruit, because this spot is thin after the original starting 5.

2. Jaren isn't a great QB. 3 things here: If his first read is not open right away, BANK on whatever pass he does make being late. Receivers are constantly waiting for the ball.

Next, his deep ball isn't good enough to lead to touchdowns. He under throws basically every deep ball. Our guys are skilled and can go get it, I credit that group. But we left more than one TD on the field with under thrown balls to wide outs.

Lastly, guys are getting open, Jaren isn't seeing them. There were MULTIPLE times I'd watch Pau hit his break over the middle on a key play, with space all around him and the cringe to see Jaren throw the ball elsewhere, often into double coverage. It wasn't just Pau either. This is a HUGE problem right now.

If Jaren isn't a threat for the defense with his legs, he's just not much of a threat at all. Teams will take away Allgeier and win. We are easy to gameplan.

3. Defense. I miss the days of Broncos defense, even when we were out-manned, we could scheme our way into staying in a game. Tuiaki's philosophy has never appealed to me and I struggle to see how any recruit could be excited. Kalani talks about "getting the other team off the field" but there is not evidence of them actually shooting for this. We rarely bring pressure, and it's typically very obvious when that pressure is coming.

Watch other teams, watch the Bills Defense. Good defenses disguise their coverages and bring pressure in a variety of ways. Our defense does not do this. It's not just a matter of "blitz more", it's how you bring that pressure and taking away the offensive ability to diagnose it before the snap. This isn't a single game issue, this is a theme. It's a problem.

Love the cougars, glad I got to the game yesterday, and the team will likely finish with 8 or so wins. One of those is Utah, so I'll take this season for what it is and be happy. But there are some glaring spots that need addressing and I'd love to be a fly on the wall in coach meetings to see things through their eyes.
