the docks. The port of LA has more than enough berths to load and unload containers, but not if they have to store both.
Keep in mind that a container ship can carry about 12,000 containers (shoeboxes), that means when a ship is unloaded, there also needs to be 12,000 ready to leave. The problem now is they 12,000 are ready to go, but not enough trucks to haul the unloaded ones away.
And think about what that means, 12,000 trucks and carriages, and that's a problem too, because these trucks haul container carriages which are also in short supply because one trip out means a driver has to return with an empty or full container. And with 100 ships waiting, that's 1,200,000 trucks with carriages that are needed. Just to clear the ones sitting off LA right now.
